Frequently asked questions
- Is pet BMI the same as human BMI?
- Not really. This tool focuses on body condition score (BCS), a 1 to 9 scale vets use by feeling ribs, waist, and fat cover. Optional weight helps suggest a direction, not a human-style BMI number.
- How do I pick the right body condition score?
- Feel the ribs with flat hands. At ideal (often BCS 5), ribs are palpable with a thin fat layer and a visible waist from above. If ribs are sharp or buried, score lower or higher accordingly.
- Why does the calculator show a weight range?
- When you enter weight and a BCS below or above ideal, the tool suggests a rough target band for gradual change. Individual pets vary, so use it as conversation starter with your vet, not a strict rule.
- When should I see the vet about weight?
- Book a visit for rapid gain or loss, scores at the extremes (1 to 3 or 7 to 9), or if diet changes are not working. Your vet can rule out illness and design a safe weight plan.
